3 minute read

Feeling the afternoon slump? Back-to-back meetings leaving you drained? As working professionals, we often push ourselves to the limit, sacrificing our well-being in the process. But what if I told you that just 5 minutes could make a significant difference in your focus, energy levels, and overall sense of well-being?

It’s true! Incorporating a short reset into your workday isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. This isn’t about adding another item to your to-do list; it’s about strategically pausing to improve your performance. This evidence-based routine combines the power of breathwork and gentle mobility exercises to help you quickly de-stress, re-energize, and return to work with renewed clarity.

Here’s your 5-minute path to a better workday:

The 5-Minute Reset Routine

Minute 1-2: Diaphragmatic Breathing

Why it works: Diaphragmatic breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the “rest and digest” response. This helps to lower your heart rate, reduce anxiety, and promote relaxation.

How to do it:

  1. Sit comfortably in your chair or stand with your feet firmly planted.
  2. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly.
  3. Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your belly to expand while keeping your chest relatively still.
  4. Exhale slowly through your mouth, drawing your belly in towards your spine.
  5. Repeat for 2 minutes, focusing on the rise and fall of your belly.

Minute 2-3: Gentle Neck and Shoulder Rolls

Why it works: Prolonged sitting and screen time often lead to tension in the neck and shoulders. These gentle movements help release that tension, improve circulation, and alleviate headaches.

How to do it:

  1. Neck Rolls: Gently drop your chin towards your chest. Slowly roll your right ear towards your right shoulder, then your head back, then your left ear to your left shoulder, and finally bring your chin back to your chest. Repeat 5 times in each direction.
  2. Shoulder Rolls: Inhale and shrug your shoulders up towards your ears. Exhale and roll your shoulders back and down. Repeat 5 times. Then, reverse the direction, rolling your shoulders forward and down. Repeat 5 times.

Minute 3-5: Seated Spinal Twists and Torso Stretches

Why it works: Spinal twists improve mobility, increase blood flow to the spine, and release tension in the back and core. Torso stretches counteract the effects of prolonged sitting.

How to do it:

  1. Seated Spinal Twist: Sit tall in your chair with both feet flat on the floor. Imagine a string pulling you up from the crown of your head. Place your left hand on your right knee. Place your right hand behind you on the chair (or the side of the chair if that’s more comfortable). Gently turn your upper body (your torso) to the right, using your hands for gentle leverage. You should feel a stretch in your back. Keep your hips facing forward. The twist should come from your mid-back. Hold this position for a breath or two, then slowly unwind and return to facing forward. Repeat on the other side, placing your right hand on your left knee and your left hand behind you, twisting to the left. Do 3-5 twists on each side, alternating sides.
  2. Seated Torso Stretch: Reach both arms overhead, interlacing your fingers and pressing your palms towards the ceiling. Gently lean to the right, feeling a stretch along your left side. Hold for a breath or two, then return to center. Repeat on the left side. Do 3-5 stretches on each side.

The Takeaway

This 5-minute reset is a simple yet powerful tool for reclaiming your focus, energy, and well-being throughout the workday. Experiment with incorporating it into your routine whenever you feel stressed, fatigued, or simply need a mental break. Your body and mind will thank you!
