New research published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (JISSN) has shown collagen peptides to be effective for reducing pain, improving joint function, and boosting mental well-being in middle-aged, active adults. This finding emerges from a rigorous study that observed the effects of daily collagen peptide intake over periods of 3, 6, and 9 months. The positive results showcase collagen’s potential to support active adults as they advance into their wisdom years.
The double-blind, randomized control trial divided participants into three groups: a placebo, a group taking 10 grams of collagen peptides daily, and another with a 20-gram daily intake. Subjects who consumed 10 grams of collagen peptides saw significant improvements in daily activities and significant pain reduction over 6 months. Interestingly, in the group that took 20 grams per day, only the female participants experienced significant physical improvements.
The results were even better among those who exercised frequently. This group also experienced a significant boost in their mental health scores, suggesting collagen peptides can play a supportive role in improving overall well-being. These findings affirm collagen’s role in not just maintaining joint health but also in supporting overall health.
Incorporating collagen into your daily supplement routine along with being consistent with other pillars of health – movement, nutrition, recovery, mindfulness – could be a key strategy to optimize your well-being, especially as we age.
