Can the Couch Cure Your Back Pain?

The vast majority of clients I’ve worked with over the years, athletes included, have limited hip mobility. This is a byproduct of our modern lifestyle, which involves an excessive amount of sitting. Over time, neglecting hip mobility can lead to a range of issues, including lower back pain. Enter the Couch Stretch or the RFE Hip Flexor Stretch. This exercise is a remarkably effective way to mobilize the hip flexor muscles.

The beauty of the RFE Hip Flexor Stretch lies in its simplicity and accessibility. Here’s how to do it right:

Set Up: Begin in a half-kneeling position, creating a 90-degree angle with your left leg. Place the top of your right foot on a pad as shown or the edge of a couch and rest your right knee on a floor pad or cushion.

Movement: Squeeze your right glute and gently push your right hip forward and down, which will engage a deep stretch that focuses on the hip flexor area of your right leg. Hold this position for at least 60-seconds before switching sides. Over time, work up to 2 minutes per side.

Regular practice of the Couch Stretch can deliver significant benefits, including improved hip mobility, which is crucial for everyday movements and performing well in physical activities. By relieving tension in the hip flexors, the Couch Stretch also helps to reduce lower back pain, a common issue that affects a significant portion of the population.

Make the Couch Stretch a staple in your movement practice to experience more physical freedom, prevent pain and reduce the risk of injury.
